Investment philosophy (for the firm)

Sundaram India Secular Opportunities Portfolio (SISOP)

The Sundaram India Secular Opportunities Portfolio (SISOP) is an actively managed equity fund that aims to generate capital appreciation by investing in a concentrated portfolio of high-conviction stocks. The fund targets investors who seek returns through investments in companies with sustainable competitive advantages and reasonable valuations.

The fund has delivered a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 17.9% since its inception in February 2010, and the investment horizon for the fund is more than three years. The benchmark for the fund is the NSE Nifty 500 Index.

SISOP invests in a concentrated multi-cap portfolio of around 15 stocks with businesses that have secular growth opportunities. The fund has an orientation in portfolio building, which means that it focuses on investing for the long term, i.e., more than three years. The fund manager looks for companies that have the potential to generate more than 15% Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) and have a low Debt-to-Equity (D/E) ratio, which can help them sail through crisis situations and gain market share.

The fund looks for companies that have a history of generating 20% cash flow/earnings growth across market cycles, favorable cash flows from the business, and the option to reinvest for growth. Such companies have strong fundamentals and are likely to generate sustainable returns in the long run.

The Sundaram Emerging Leadership Fund

The Sundaram Emerging Leadership Fund (S.E.L.F.) is an actively managed equity fund that aims to seek long-term capital appreciation through investments in mid and small-cap companies. The fund targets long-term investors who are comfortable with short-term volatility and seek returns through investments predominantly in small and mid-cap stocks.

Since its inception in June 2010, S.E.L.F. has delivered a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 17.81%. The investment horizon for the fund is more than three years, and the benchmark for the fund is the Nifty Midcap 100 Index.

S.E.L.F. invests in a multi-sector portfolio of around 25 stocks with a market capitalization of less than INR 500 billion. The fund leverages Sundaram’s mid and small-cap research strength to identify companies with assets light, high Return on Capital Employed (ROCE), and excellent cash conversion from operations. The fund manager looks for companies with the potential to transition from mid-cap to large-cap and small-cap to mid-cap, which can generate significant returns for investors.

The fund also follows India 2025 themes such as Capex Maestros, Phygital Bluechips, Consumption Czars, and Export Voyagers. These themes represent the long-term growth opportunities in the Indian economy, and the fund invests in companies that are likely to benefit from these themes.
