India Special Opportunity Fund (ISOF) was launched in 2018 as an India-focused sector agnostic senior secured credit fund investing in Special Situations and Stressed Assets. ISOF is a Category II Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) regulated by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). ISOF is targeting a corpus of INR 20 billion and is managed by Alpha Alternative Asset Advisors (AAA), an India based Investment Manager Company.

The Fund seeks to uniquely capitalize on the special situations and stressed assets opportunities in India to generate high risk adjusted return while ensuring capital protection. The Fund will employ various instruments such as debentures, mezzanine debt, preferential debt, convertibles, warrants, equity, etc. of listed and unlisted Indian entities.

Alpha Special Opportunity Fund II (ASOF II), an India-focused sector-agnostic fund regulated by Financial Services Commission (FSC), Mauritius, has been set-up for potential foreign investors to participate in ISOF. ASOF II is targeting a corpus of US$ 200 million and is managed by Alpha Alternative Investment (AAI), a Mauritius based Investment Manager Company regulated by the FSC.

ASOF II seeks to invest in special situations and stressed asset opportunities in India. The Fund may invest a sizable portion of its assets in ISOF.

About the AMC

  • Alpha Alternatives is an Alternative Asset Management platform founded in 2012 by Rajeev Mehrotra.

Key staff

●     Rajeev Mehrotra (MD and CIO): In his professional career of over 27 years, Rajeev has worked with Indian and global corporates as well as Investment Banks and Alternative Investment funds both in India and abroad. He started his professional career in 1990 working with industrial companies in corporate finance & banking functions and gradually focused and built the career around capital markets and investment banking.

●     S Balasubramanian (Director and Co-CIO): Mr. S Balasubramanian has close to three decades of industry experience, including over 26 years in banking and finance. Most recently, he was COO in a solar power company with responsibility for finance and management of assets and, prior to that, an Operating Partner in India of an international venture capital firm. He has a diverse sectoral experience covering power (generation, transmission, distribution and renewable), oil & gas, transportation, metals & mining, telecommunications and financial services among other. In recent times, he has worked extensively with start-up, early and growth stage companies assisting them on financing, resources and operations.

●     Nilesh Ramnani, CFA (Senior Analyst): Nilesh has 7 years of experience in Financial Industry. Prior to joining Alpha Alternatives, he worked with Bank of America Group as a Senior Analyst, Global Investment Banking. Prior to that, he held the position of Lead Associate at Verity Knowledge Solutions, a former affiliate of UBS Investment Bank. He has also worked in London Bank of America Merrill Lynch office with senior bankers on live deals. In his current role, Nilesh focuses on Investments analysis and exit strategies. Nilesh is a Civil Engineer, MBA in Finance and a CFA® charterholder.

The core investing strategy rests on our ability to decipher complex situations & structures and evolve simple solutions. The investment strategy is based on value identification, innovative structuring & pricing and extensive diligence. The asset management strategy relies on our ability to proactively monitor assets & covenants, manage risk and exits in a timely manner.
